Strong performances by two special guards push two county schools to the championship semifinals in the 10th Annual Henrico Holiday Hoops Tournament Thursday.
Korey Turner poured in 29 points as the Midlothian Trojans dropped Hermitage 67-53. Luke Milanovic, who went into early foul trouble with three personals after a technical halfway through the first quarter, scored all of his 12 points in the second half. Midlothian moves to 6-2 and gets the host school, Henrico, in Friday's first championship semifinal.
In the closest quarterfinal of the day, Meadowbrook and Glen Allen fought tooth and nail, neither team able to get more than a five point lead. But key free throw misses down the stretch helped doom the Jaguars, and Meadowbrook moved to 7-1 with a 57-52 victory over Glen Allen.
Brandon Cheeks, who averages 23 points per game, had 26 for the Monarchs, while Jeff Lee added nine. The Monarchs get 5A North Region favorite Potomac in Friday's second championship semifinal. The Panthers, who have six players on the roster 6' 3" or taller, sped past Hanover 76-58 in the last quarterfinal of the night.
Midlothian/Henrico is scheduled to begin at 5:30 Friday, Meadowbrook/Potomac will follow at approximately 7:15.
