Slow and steady wins the race. That mantra served the Cosby Titans well Thursday afternoon.
Falling behind 1-0 early, the Titans scored one run in the 3rd to tie the game, one in the 4th to take the lead, and two insurance runs in the 6th to clinch a 4-1 victory at Manchester this afternoon.
Ariel Cooke was the offensive hero for Cosby, hitting two doubles to left-center field, each driving in a run, including the winning run in the fourth inning. Cooke also scored a run in Cosby's two-run sixth inning.
Both starters went the distance: Alex Quill for Manchester, and Chelsea Whitcomb for Cosby. Whitcomb struck out seven Lancers, including two each in the third, fifth, and seventh innings.
Lindsey Hall started the scoring by lining a shot that sailed over the left field fence for a solo homer for the Lancers to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
Cosby, now 5-0, hosts Thomas Dale on Friday, then has three games next week leading into Spring Break. The Titans are currently the #1 team in the Richmond Times-Dispatch Top 10 for area softball. Manchester, who was #8 in the poll entering today's game, falls to 4-2, both losses coming at home in games where the Lancers held the lead at one point.
Manchester hosts King William, weather permitting, Monday afternoon.
