The Cosby Titans girls soccer team won truly a match for the ages Friday evening, coming from behind in desperate mode, first to force overtime, which led to a golden goal in the third sudden death period to win the 6A South Region Championship.
Cosby, down 1-0 to Frank W. Cox since early in the second half, scored in stoppage time as Carly McBain found the net before the whistle sounded to force overtime.
Each team scored in the first extra session, the Titans briefly leading thanks to CaryBeth Reynolds' tally in the 85th minute. But Cox tied it three minutes later, leading to overtime #3.
That's when Madi Conyers stepped in, sending the championship clincher into the back of the net in the match's 93rd and final minute.
The Titans are now 18-0 and play in the 6A State Semis next Friday.
Meanwhile, Cosby softball advanced to 23-0, riding the arm of Virginia Tech commit Chelsea Whitcomb to a 1-0 win over First Colonial. Whitcomb, who pitched the Titans to the 2012 State Group AAA Championship as a sophomore, had eleven strikeouts in the victory.
Cosby baseball was not as fortunate, running into the offensive attack of Western Branch, falling on the road 8-1 in their 6A South Region Final. The Titans move to the State Final Four at 22-1.
