Field Hockey kicked off its 2014 season Monday, and for county teams, it was mostly a successful start.
In the only game involving two county schools, Clover Hill got a hat trick from Madison Lindsay as the Cavaliers defeated Matoaca 3-0. The Warriors (0-1) finished second in the Conference 12 Tournament last season, advancing to 5A South Region play before being eliminated by eventual state semifinalist Lee-Davis.
Monacan and Midlothian were both winners in early season Conference 20 showdowns. Danielle Gilmore and Austyn Faries each scored twice for the Chiefs as Monacan shut out Glen Allen on the road 5-0 last night to start the season at 1-0.
For Midlothian, it was a tougher battle than expected at conference rival Hanover. In a rematch of a tournament semifinal from last year won by the Trojans 1-0, Midlothian and Hanover played 60 minutes, then 15 more, finishing at 1-1, forcing penalty strokes.
Francesca Urcia, Allison Gonzalez and Sophia Richie each scored on Hanover goalkeeper Rachel Weis, and the Trojans outlasted the Hawks 3-1 in penalty strokes for a 4-2 final score.
Midlothian next welcomes Glen Allen for a 7pm match Wednesday, Monacan welcomes Hanover to town also at 7pm Wednesday, while Clover Hill goes to Prince George for another Conference 12 battle, Thursday at 4pm.
