Weekend Review: South Falls Short, Cosby Falls In Semis....

Daniel Rose had an MVP day in his final performance as a high school football player, representing the Manchester Lancers as quarterback of the South team in the second annual Big River Rivalry all-star game Saturday at Randolph-Macon.

Rose was 12-of-22 for 257 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for two others, including a potential game-tying bomb of 63 yards to Gemonta Jackson of Petersburg with 26 seconds to go to make the score 28-27. But South head coach Billy Mills of Dinwiddie opted not to go for overtime, but to win with a two-point conversion.

The play, a running play for Powhatan tailback Logan Allen, was stuffed by Nic Jones of Hermitage. The North recovered an onside kick and, for the second time in as many years, the South saw their chances for victory snuffed out at the north end of Day Field at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, as the North won another one-point game at 28-27.

*****
Cosby basketball, after winning their first round games Friday in the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament, fell in both semifinals held at Randolph-Macon Saturday night.

The girls saw a 16-13 halftime lead disappear under a chance in Glen Allen's defensive scheme, and the Jaguars upset the Titans 50-34 in the T-DIT girls semifinals. Jocelyn Jones led the Titans with 10 points. They will face Hermitage in the Consolation Game Tuesday, 3:30pm at the Siegel Center.

Meanwhile the boys ran into a buzzsaw in unbeaten, fourth-ranked John Marshall, as the Justices built a ten-point halftime lead, then poured in 20 in the third quarter to pull away for a 69-40 win. The Titans were led by Zane Najdawi with ten points. The 3-4 Titans will get Benedictine in Tuesday's 5pm Boys Consolation Game.

THREEPEAT: L.C. Bird Wins Third Straight State Championship

FINAL: L.C. Bird 22, Tuscarora 19

Skyhawks overcome early 13-0 deficit, shut down Tuscarora running back Noah Reimers in the second half, and capture their 14th straight postseason win. L.C. Bird hasn't lost a playoff game in 1,114 days, dating back to November 25, 2011.

Reimers, who entered the game averaging 227 yards rushing per game en route to a 14-0 mark, ran for 115 in the first half, but only for 15 after intermission, as the Huskies were held scoreless after the break.

The only score of the second half was the championship-clinching touchdown, a 32-yard pass from Jalen Elliott to Waymond Pate with 10:22 left in the game. Two defensive stops later, and the Skyhawks began lifting three fingers to the sky.

Stephen Mines had 108 yards rushing before leaving the game in the third quarter due to injury. J.B. Wright stepped in and rushed for 64 yards on 17 carries, many of those yards in the critical touchdown drive.

TURNING POINT: Tuscarora led 13-0 in the second quarter and had stopped the Skyhawks, forcing a punt near midfield. A short kick hit an upman for Tuscarora, and L.C. Bird recovered at the Huskies' 43. Mines ran for 28 yards on two carries to enter the red zone, then later scored on a four-yard run to cut the deficit to 13-7. Except for Tuscarora's 38-yard TD pass with :05 left before the half, the rest of the game was dictated by the Skyhawks from this point forward.

NOTES: For seniors like Daijuane Dorsey, Darnell Gore, Tyler Wilkins, Mines, Andre Davis, Devin Durham, Jake Alley, Jamie Ross and Lewis Grant, their Skyhawks career knows only about winning. The Class of 2015, in the past three seasons, went 42-2, only losing regular season games this fall to Lake Taylor and, on a Hail Mary pass, Manchester.

Elliott and Wright are juniors, and here's a scary thought for future Bird opponents, defensive stalwarts Rayshard Ashby and Isaiah Moore are only sophomores.

Congratulations to head coach David Bedwell and their staff on a championship run, now three years running, unprecedented in Central Region history.

HEARTBREAK: Monacan Loses State Semifinal In Improbable Manner....

Everything looked right. The storybook ending would send the underdog Monacan Chiefs to their first-ever appearance in a State Football Championship game.

Except for one small detail, and one heads-up play by Lake Taylor.

Monacan blocked a would-be game-winning 23-yard Titan field goal attempt in the final seconds of the 4A South Region Championship Friday in Norfolk, and promptly began their celebration. But in the euphoria of the moment, the players forgot something.

The whistle didn't blow.

The ball never crossed the line of scrimmage, and Marquise Poole scooped up the live ball and went into the end zone. Final score: Lake Taylor 19, Monacan 14.

Never has celebration turned into heartache quicker.

Monacan finishes its best season since 1985 at 11-3.

"To lose it like that, it's frustrating, it's sucks. But that's the rules of the game," said Monacan Head Coach Jim Henderson after the game to NBC12.

Freshman quarterback Syour Flood passed for 230 yards and two touchdowns.
