Megan Walker, in front of college coaches from across the spectrum, poured in 37 points, including the last five points of the first half to expand an eight-point lead into a 38-25 intermission advantage, as #2 Monacan improved to 7-1 with an impressive 82-56 win at #3 Cosby on the RVA Sports Network High School Basketball Game of The Week Monday night.
With the loss, the third-ranked Titans, led by Jocelyn Jones' 22 points, fall to 4-2.
Bailey Hodges hit four free throws to help Cosby tie Monacan at 24 midway through the second quarter, but the final four minutes belonged to the Chiefs, going on a 14-1 run to claim their halftime margin. While Cosby spent most of the third quarter trying to shave the deficit at the free throw line, and struggling, Monacan surged ahead again, scoring six points in the final ten seconds of the third quarter for a 59-39 lead going to the fourth.
When Monacan scored the first seven points of the fourth period, the win was secured. Jaiden Morris, a verbal commit to George Mason, who had a coach present at the game, added 16 points for Monacan, while Jasmine Norman and Alex Parson added ten each. Tyra Whitehead scored 12 points for Cosby, but struggled with outside shooting, as did Jones, most of the night.
Monacan will host Midlothian Tuesday night for the first time since their meeting for the 4A State Championship last March won by the Chiefs. Cosby goes to Midlothian in their next game Thursday, then make the trip to Franklin County for a Conference 3 matchup Saturday afternoon.
